Chapter 2 Supplies
Lab 2. A. Insects and Making a Collection
- Wide-mouthed jar with a lid
- Cotton balls
- Nail polish remover, either isoamyl acetate or acetone
- Cardboard or plastic box with tight-fitting lid.
- Sheet of cork or Styrofoam on which to pin insects.
- Specimen collecting net
- Insect pins, size 3
Lab 2. B. Dissection of a Grasshopper
- Preserved or recently captured grasshopper
- Dissecting kit with pins
- Dissecting tray or dish
- Hand lens or dissecting microscope
- Paper towels or cleanup rags
Chapter 3 Supplies
Lab 3. A.: Structure of Atoms and Molecules
Please follow this link, which has several models: starch, lipids, sucrose, and glucose. There are a couple of molecular sets too. Here, the student can gain the experience of simple chemistry. You can decide how simple or complex to make these. Perhaps there is no better way to visualize simple chemistry than using simple models for every day substances.
Lab 3. B.: Food Chemistry
- Benedict’s Solution
- Lugol’s iodine or iodine solution
- Pan or 500-ml beaker
- Pyrex test tubes (16 x 150 mm), test tube rack, and test tube clamp
- Glucose solution
- eyedroppers or dropping pipets
- distilled water
- Starch suspension
- Pieces of food or food samples: unsweetened cereal such as rolled oats, shredded wheat, wheat germ, uncooked rice, piece of raw potato, piece of bread.
- Pieces of fruits or canned fruits, including juices: apple, orange, grape, pineapple, pear, and tomato.
